Dear Members, At the European Summer School in Information (ESSIR 2007) which will be held at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, the BCS-IRSG is launching a new symposium called: Future Directions in Information Access to be held on the afternoons of the 28th and 29th of August, 2007. See http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/essir2007/ and http://irsg.bcs.org/fdia2007.php for more details. We invited submissions for presentation at the Symposium, especially from researchers new to the field and PhD Students. Call For Papers - Deadline: June 1, 2007 FDIA 2007 The BCS-IRSG Symposium on Future Directions in Information Access Date and Location: August 28-29, 2007, Glasgow, Scotland http://irsg.bcs.org/fdia2007.php Promoting and Encouraging Early Research in IR ---------------------------------------------- Information Retrieval conferences are now becoming highly competitive. As such, it is difficult for many new researchers to present and share their ideas which are at more formative or tentative stages. The aim of this symposium is to provide a forum where future directions of information access can be presented and discussed in an open and friendly environment. The objectives of the IRSG FDIA Symposium are: - To provide an accessible forum for early researchers (particularly PhD students, and researchers new to the field) to share and discuss their research. - To create and foster the formative and tentative research ideas. - To encourage discussion and debate. The IRSG FDIA Symposium aims to provide researchers with an excellent opportunity to receive constructive feedback on their current and future research directions. Submissions focusing on new directions and emerging work in Information Access/Retrieval which create discussion and provoke reaction are strongly encouraged. Submissions should provide the necessary background and motivation of the topic, so as to maximize the benefit to the author and fellow participants Topics/Areas of Interest ------------------------ These include, but are not limited to, the following areas: - IR models, techniques, and algorithms - Searching, browsing, meta-searching, data fusion, filtering, and indexing - Text and content classification, mining, extraction, and summarization - Topic detection, and tracking - Personalized, collaborative, recommender, user-adaptive IR - Improvements on existing and new IR models - Compression, performance, optimization - Users, society, and IR - User modelling, user studies, user interaction in IR systems - Novel user interfaces for IR systems - Visualization and presentation of queries, search results, and content - Information management - Cross-language and multi-language IR - IR applications - Web IR - Mobile and ubiquitous IR - Digital libraries - IR system architectures - Distributed/Parallel - Mobile / Multimodal - Open, interoperable, and flexible - Content representation, and processing - IR and structured content e.g. XML based - Unstructured content / Meta information and structures - Test and evaluation methods for IR systems - Test collections and bench marking - User-oriented and user-centered test and evaluation - Multimedia and cross-media IR / Speech and IR - Image and video IR / Digital music, radio, and TV Submission Format ----------------- - 6 pages in eWic Formats (MS Word or HTML format Only - unfortunately, we cannot accept Latex). The proceedings will be made available via the eWic electronic publication service. - Single Author only (where, Phd Supervisors and Colleagues should be included in the acknowledgment section, where applicable). - All papers will be reviewed with respect to overall quality of presentation, the potential for future impact of the proposed research on the field of Information Retrieval by at least one senior reviewer. - Accepted papers will be presented at the symposium as posters, along with short presentations. - Submissions must be in English, which is the official language of the symposium. - Prizes for best paper, best presentation and best poster will be awarded at the symposium. - Submissions should be sent directly to the PC Chair, Dr. Andrew MacFarlane at andym@soi.city.ac.uk Important Dates --------------- June 1, 2007: Submission Deadline July 1, 2007: Notification of acceptance/rejection August 1, 2007: Camera Ready papers due August 27-31, 2007: European Summer School and FDIA Symposium
