Call for Papers Special Topic Issue of JASIST Mining Web Resources for Enhancing Information Retrieval *Extended Deadline: March 31 2006* The next Special Topics Issue of the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST) is scheduled to come out in early 2007 on the topic of Mining Web Resources for Enhancing Information Retrieval. The guest editors for this special issue will be Wai Lam ( http://www.se.cuhk.edu.hk/people/wlam.html) and Christopher C. Yang ( http://www.se.cuhk.edu.hk/people/yang.html) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Filippo Menczer (http://informatics.indiana.edu/fil) of Indiana University. The amount of information on the Web has been expanding at an enormous pace. There are a variety of Web documents in different genres such as news, reports, reviews, and so on. Traditionally, the information displayed on Web sites has been static. Recently, there are many Web sites offering content that is dynamically generated and frequently updated. It is also common for Web sites to contain information in different languages since many countries adopt more than one language. Moreover, content may exist in multimedia formats including text, images, video, and audio. Although the Web contains a rich amount of valuable resources, raw Web pages are mainly designed for supporting information browsing. Intelligent text mining techniques have recently been applied to the Web environment to harvest or generate novel patterns or knowledge that can be useful in different information seeking situations. For example, one can employ a mining method to harvest terms from bilingual Web sites to discover candidates for the task of term translation in cross-lingual information retrieval. Another example is to make use of text mining methods for analyzing and extracting informative content from Web pages to improve the precision of search. This special topic issue solicits high-quality innovative papers addressing significant research questions related to the broad research area of mining Web resources for enhancing information retrieval. Special topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * mining multilingual lexicons from the Web * name entities mining * ontology mining * Web semantics * Web page mining * metadata generation from the Web * Web information exploration * Web services for IR * infomediaries * Web page classification * advanced Web search * personalized Web searching * hidden Web The guest editors seek papers that discuss research in the area of Mining Web Resources for Enhancing Information Retrieval.
