CALL FOR PAPERS Mixed Language Explanations in Learning Environments International Workshop in conjunction with 12th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education AIED 2005 Amsterdam, July 18-22, 2005 http://andes3.lrdc.pitt.edu/xlang/ IMPORTANT DATES: April 20, 2005: Deadline for paper submissions May 2, 2005: Authors notified May 20, 2005: Deadline for camera ready submissions July 18-22, 2005: Conference AIED 2005 DESCRIPTION The focus of this workshop is on the issues of and methods for analyzing and generating mixed language explanations, namely, explanations that combine natural language, symbolic (e.g. algebraic) expressions, formal domain concepts and diagrams, in learning environments. The workshop will address dialogue, multi-party interactions and text. For more details visit http://andes3.lrdc.pitt.edu/xlang/ TOPICS OF INTEREST The topics of interest for the workshop include but are not strictly limited to: - Analyses of human-human mixed language explanations. - Combining statistical and formal methods for analyzing mixed language explanations. - Generating feedback that contains mixed language expressions. - Evaluating completeness of mixed language explanations. - Verifying correctness, consistency of mixed language explanations. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND ORGANIZATION We plan a one day workshop as a sequence of presentations of submitted and refereed papers, and one or more discussion/demonstration/poster sessions. EXPECTED AUDIENCE This workshop attempts to bring together: - researchers working on NL-enabled learning environments for domains commonly dominated by systems with exclusively algebraic/diagrammatic interfaces, - those researchers working with algebraic/diagrammatic learning systems that are interested in enhancing them with NL capabilities, and - those with expertise in language processing involving symbolic e.g. algebraic) expressions, diagrams and formal domain concepts. SUBMISSIONS We invite submissions of papers on completed work, work in progress and position papers that address issues involving mixed language. Paper submissions will be accepted in the following categories: - Full papers (8 pages) - should describe completed work or work in progress that addresses the focus of the workshop. - Position papers (6 pages) - should describe positions with respect to the focus of the workshop. - Demonstrations/posters (3 pages) - should describe the work to be demonstrated or presented. Submissions must be formatted according to IOS Press requirements specified at the AIED submission site: http://hcs.science.uva.nl/AIED2005/submission.html Submissions must be sent in PDF format to Maxim Makatchev: maxim(at)pitt.edu. Registration: participants are normally expected to register for the AIED conference.
