Key recent developments are metadata integration languages, Semantic Web technologies and ontology representations of catalogues. This has resulted in new possibilities for integration and automation in digital libraries and Internet information sources, and it has also resulted in a requirement for new assessment techniques and quality criteria. Objectives ---------- The main objective of the special issue is to gather recent research results about any aspects of the use, creation, retrieval, distribution or analysis of digital resources and metadata. Topics include (but are not limited to) the following: %G•%@ Metadata infrastructures, catalogues and interoperability. %G•%@ Metadata in digital libraries. %G•%@ Approaches to retrieval using metadata or ontologies. %G•%@ Intelligent techniques for the handling of metadata. %G•%@ Evaluation of information services %G•%@ Quality of metadata and assessment of digital management infrastructures. %G•%@ Semantic Web and ontologies for metadata management, digital libraries and information services. %G•%@ New roles and techniques for metadata-intensive services.
