Antofagasta is the largest city (250,000 people) and port in northern Chile, thanks to its economical and natural resources. It has nice nearby beaches (Juan L'opez and Mejillones). The Atacama desert hosts several large mining companies, among them Codelco-Chuquicamata, the largest open pit mine in the world. Other tourist attractions in the area include the towns of San Pedro de Atacama and Toconao, Tatio geysers, and the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), places which can usually be visited on one-day tours.
