CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Workshop on the Web and Databases (WebDB 2002) Madison, Wisconsin June 6-7, 2002 http://www.db.ucsd.edu/webdb2002/ webdb2002@cs.ucsd.edu Workshop Goals The advent of the Web has generated a new class of applications (portals, electronic marketplaces, etc.) and has changed the focus of information processing from centralized, relational servers to exporting information on the Web using open and flexible models (such as XML) and to computing information using Web sources. This new landscape has created new challenges and opportunities at the juncture of databases and the Web. It has compelled the database community to revisit its approach to data models, query languages, query optimization, XML and semistructured data management, data and application integration, and data publishing. The new landscape also demands that database research further interact with information retrieval, programming languages, distributed computing, workflows, and other areas of Computer Science. The WebDB workshop focusses on promoting novel research directions and providing a forum where researchers, theoreticians, and practitioners can share their knowledge and opinions about problems and solutions at the intersection of data management and the Web. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Data models for the Web * Query languages and systems for XML and Web data * Semistructured data management * Finding structure in Web information * Information retrieval in semistructured data and the Web * Data integration over the Web * Warehousing of Web data * Data-intensive applications on the Web * Methodologies and tools for Web data publishing * Transactions on the Web * Web services and distributed computing over the Web * Security and integrity issues * Web semantics Important Dates * E-mail of interest: March 8, 2002 * Submission deadline: March 15, 2002 * Notification: April 19, 2002 * Camera-Ready Due: May 3, 2002 * Workshop: June 6-7, 2002 Program Committee Paolo Atzeni, Universita' Roma Tre Junghoo Cho, University of California, Los Angeles Juliana Freire, Bell Laboratories - Lucent Technologies Luis Gravano, Columbia University Bertram Ludaescher, San Diego Supercomputer Center - U.C.
