CALL FOR PAPERS THE EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON THE WEB AND DATABASES WebDB 2005 http://webdb2005.luc.ac.be June 17, 2005; Baltimore, USA (sponsored by ACM SIGMOD) The Web hosts ever-increasing volumes of diverse data and associated services that cannot be fully exploited unless appropriate management and integration technologies are developed. The influence of the Web has been remarkable in the areas of databases, AI, and IR, where existing data models, data retrieval and extraction techniques, query languages and evaluation strategies, and semantic integration methods are constantly being revisited to account for new and heterogeneous data types, as well as for new scenarios under which the data is generated and processed. The WebDB workshop promotes novel research on next-generation information systems and encourages interaction between the database and other Web-related research communities. The workshop provides a forum where researchers and practitioners can share their knowledge and opinions about problems and solutions at the intersection of data management and the Web. * Topics of Interest Of special relevance to this edition of the workshop are papers that address fundamental issues in large scale data integration on the Web, that bring in new perspectives from the AI and IR fields, and that propose novel integration paradigms. Specifically, the topics of interest for WebDB 2005 include but are certainly not limited to: - Data and schema integration - Approximate and trustworthy query answering - Integration of text into XML and relational databases - XML query processing and data management - Web search and distributed information retrieval - Web mining, exploration, and visualization - Web privacy and security - The Semantic Web - Infrastructure for Web services - Peer-to-peer search networks - Foundations of XML * Organization of the Workshop The workshop will consist of 1-2 invited talks, paper presentations, a panel, and poster/demo sessions. To stimulate interaction and discussion, in addition to oral presentations, authors of the accepted papers also have the option of presenting posters. * Paper Submission Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers that are not being considered for publication in any other forum. Papers should be submitted electronically as PDF files and be formatted using the camera-ready templates available at http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html. Papers submitted cannot exceed six pages in length, including reference and appendix. Detailed submission instructions will be available at the workshop homepage http://webdb2005.luc.ac.be . Submitted research papers will also be automatically considered for the poster-only option. In addition, authors are invited to submit demo proposals as PDF files to either of the co-chairs (frank.neven@luc.ac.be or anhai@cs.uiuc.edu). The demo proposals must not exceed three pages in length, using the same format as that of research papers. * Important Dates Submission deadline (papers & demos) Wed, March 23, 2005, 9:00PM PST Notification to authors Sat, April 30, 2005 Camera-ready due Tue, May 17, 2005 Workshop Fri, June 17, 2005 * Workshop Co-Chairs AnHai Doan, Univ of Illinois, USA, anhai@cs.uiuc.edu Frank Neven, Limburgs Universitair Centrum, Belgium, frank.neven@luc.ac.be * Program Committee Bruce Croft, Univ of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA Kevin Chang, Univ of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA Junghoo Cho, Univ of California at Los Angeles, USA Wenfei Fan, Bells Lab and Univ of Edinburgh, UK Juliana Freire, Univ of Utah and OGI/OHSU, USA Zack Ives, Univ of Pennsylvania, USA H.
