------------------------------------------------------------------- WIIW 2001 http://www.cos.ufrj.br/wiiw International Workshop on Information Integration on the Web - Technologies and Applications Rio de Janeiro, Brazil April 9-11, 2001 ------------------------------------------------------------------ IMPORTANT DATES December 29, 2000: E-mail with abstract (100 words) December 29, 2000: Deadline for receiving short papers February 9, 2001: Notification of acceptance March 2, 2001: Deadline for receiving final version April 9-11, 2001: Workshop ------------------------------------------------------------------ Keynote Speakers * M.Tamer Öszu, U. of Waterloo, Canada * Mokrane Bouzeghoub, U. of Versailles, France ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsored by: * Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq, Brazil) * Institut National de Recherche en Infomatique et Automatique (INRIA, France) * Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ, Brazil) With the advent of the World Wide Web, information integration has evolved from a traditional multidatabase architecture to a new framework dealing with a variety of information available in diverse formats and structures. The context of the Internet raises a number of issues for information integration that are far more difficult than those of multidatabase systems. First, the number of data sources may be very high thereby making view integration and conflict resolution a hard problem. Second, the space of data sources is very dynamic so adding or dropping a data source should be done with minimal impact on the integrated view. Third, the data sources may have different computing capabilities, ranging from full-featured database management systems to simple files. Finally, data sources may be unstructured or semistructured thus providing virtually no information for view integration. Furthermore, understanding application semantics requires adequate metadata specification, which is heavily area dependent; for example, environmental, scientific, business applications have their own ontologies. The CNPq/INRIA-supported Ecobase project (http://www.uniriotec.br/ecobase), which is the root of this workshop, addresses some of these issues in the context of environmental applications. The goal of the workshop is to share research and development addressing information integration issues in any application areas, since many of them are cross-disciplinary issues. TOPICS OF INTEREST * Integration architectures * Data-intensive applications on the Web (environmental, geographical, e-business, publishing, e-learning, etc.) * Metadata management * Integration of spatial data * Data and program publication * XML and semistructured data management * Web data warehousing * Web data mediation * Managing of Web documents * Web information modeling * Methodologies and tools for Web information publishing and integration SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Authors are invited to submit a short paper, in English, with 4 to 6 pages (single-column, single-spaced, 12pt, approximately 1500 to 3000 words) by December 29, 2000. Electronic submissions are required. Please send an e-mail containing your submission in postscript, PDF or HTML format to: wiiw2001@uniriotec.br English is the official language of WIIW, thus all papers must be submitted and presented in English. Due to possible problems with the mail server (wiiw2001@uniriotec.br), we kindly ask authors to copy messages to tanaka@rjnet.com.br Authors intending to submit a paper are invited to send an e-mail of interest by December 29, 2000 to the address above, containing title, authors and a short abstract (100 words) of the paper. Submitted papers will be evaluated by at least three reviewers, based on relevance, technical soundness, originality, and clarity of presentation. The acceptance of a paper implies that at least one of the authors will register for the workshop and thus present the paper. Papers accepted for presentation will be included in the workshop proceedings, and published on the Workshop Web site. Selected best papers will be invited for publication (in full version, subject to refereeing) in a special issue of an international journal.
